CASTLECARY MEMORIAL GARDEN

The idea to build a Memorial Garden within the Village of Castlecary was first suggested by the residents of Castlecary themselves. During a door to door survey of the Village which was being carried out by Castlecary Residents Association ( Later to be joined by Castlecary Community Council )

Sadly ! in the 1950's, two local Children were killed in an accident within the Village of Castlecary, in the Childrens Swing Park. The Swing Park was closed down, and the area was fenced off, to leave the area turn into just another grassy area. To anybody passing that area, they would be unaware that such a tragic accident had ever taken place. No memorials were left on the site to remember the memory of these Children.

The residents of Castlecary asked there Residents Association if they could have a look at this matter and perhaps build a small memorial on the site of the accident.

After contacting the accident site owners ( North Lanarkshire Council ) it was decided that our group should lease this land from the Council, and build a small Memorial Garden which would act as a tribute to these kids, as well as act as a functual garden for residents and visitors.

Our group then set about fundraising over £30.000 to build this garden. From sposered walks, dances, raffles, right up to Council grants and Lottery grants, all money raising events were looked at. Finally enough money was raised and the work began on the garden.

Local residents would help with the lifting, digging and planting of plants also. Local companies and shops would help by donating items and plants for the garden also. Most of the work was however carried out by The LawnCare Garden Copany, who did a great job turning our plans into a beautiful garden.

Finaly in 1999, the garden was open to the public, and remains one of the Central Scotlands most beautiful small community gardens.
